Hear, hear

We had a wonderful opening on Sunday, with over 100 people coming out to see Landing Gear and to celebrate with us (photos to come). In addition to the show in the gallery, we had a large space with live music, where kids could run around, play, and do crafts. The only thing that was tricky was that it was very crowded in the gallery, which made it difficult to hear the audio, but I’ve heard that can often be a challenge with openings of sound art.
The documentary audio of the mothers talking about their clothing is housed in the old trunk. When you open a drawer, the mother’s stories start playing. It’s a really cool effect to hear the women’s voices coming out of a drawer, and I was excited to bring the idea to life with the help of the excellent Hector Centeno, who rigged the trunk to play the stories. ¬†Each drawer is a different theme: freedom, sex, comfort, work, and change.
Many people have ventured back to hear the mother’s stories, but I thought it would be fun to post a couple of them here, to give a taste of the show. Just imagine you’re pulling a drawer open to listen.
