Bring the Kids

A lot of people have been asking us if they should bring their kids to “Welcome to Motherland”, our art exhibition on May 23rd at the Goodman Community Center.  After all, art shows and young-children-who-want-to-touch-everything-not-nailed-down don’t always go together.

For “Welcome to Motherland”, we actually want you to bring your kids–in fact, many of the pieces require their (and your) participation.  We’ve designed an immersive, interactive installation that will invite all of you to touch some of the art and contribute to the ongoing project.

One of the pieces is an interactive sculpture based on those cardboard bricks that kids love to build with.  We’ve layered those bricks with photos and text, and ask everyone to join in and play with them, read them, create new juxtapositions, construct with them, and then knock them down.  As people interact with the piece, it will change, and we’re really excited to see how that transpires.

We’ve also created a mail art installation in which we ask people to contribute their stories about Motherland through postcards and add them to the exhibition, while kids and anyone who wants to can design “Motherland” stamps (after all, those postcards have to have postage).  There’s also a touchable mobile that lets you peep in at another world, a sound installation that puts you a mother’s chair, and more.

Our main group of eight women have a total of 11 children, most of whom are toddlers, and all of whom will be there celebrating with us.  We hope you will too!
