Dispatch #1: Unexpected Lullabies
Make a recording of an unexpected lullaby that you sing (or sung) to your baby. It could be a song you made up to a melody you already knew, a song that you never expected to sing to your child but just suddenly found it soothed him or her best, a song that was passed down in your family, even a very inappropriate song that you sang in a lullaby voice in the middle of the night when you were desperate. Before or after you sing, share the story of the song and how you came to sing it.
How to submit your dispatch: Record the song by leaving a message on The Motherland Line at 202-59MOMMY (202-596-6669). For better sound quality, please call from a land line if possible. If you don’t have free long distance to that area code, you can use the Google widget below. Just type in your phone number, and the system will connect you to the line for free.
All submissions are anonymous, but if you would like credit, please email us your name with the song title so I can match it to your recording, and a web site you want your credit linked to, if any.

Oh, I wish I could remember our 100 additional verses to “Hush, Little Baby,” but my babies are now 18 and 16! This whole project is a wonderful idea. Please posts lots of photos–wish I could get there from NJ to see it.
I will be recording one of the many lullabies I sing this week. So grateful I found this site. Kind of interesting timing as well, since I just wrote a blog entry last week (but have yet to post it) about the songs I sing my daughter, which are far from the traditional lullabies. I will probably wait until I’ve submitted my dispatch to publish the entry. I love finding synchronicities in my life!
I can’t wait to record, what a wonderful idea! I have several songs with original lyrics sung to familiar tunes but I will pick my favorite. I wish I were closer so I could really be involved in this hands on project. It’s such a beautiful idea! Thank you Mindy!
I have my “desperation lullaby” in mind… will record it soon!
